Some organizations are a one man show; a single person controls all the resources, holds all the power, and makes all the important decisions. In such cases proximity to the leader is the important metric, e.g. as manifested in the seating arrangement around a dinner table. People in the organization naturally gravitate towards competing for the leader's favor in an attempt to get closer to the honey pot. Politics and back-stabbing ensue.
When joining a kingdom, be prepared to deal with the king's court.
